Living a healthy lifestyle can be difficult for beginners. There is so much information available that the entire process can seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are three tips to help you begin your fitness journey
1. Go For a Walk
Simple, yet effective. Walking will increase your metabolism, increase bone density, and help strengthen your heart.
Walking can also be great for your mental health. I use walking to clear my mind, evaluate my progress toward my goals, and reflect on life.
This doesn’t have to be a solo venture. Invite your significant other or bring the entire family to share your daily events and get fit together.
A family that exercises together, stays together!
2. Prepare Meals Ahead of Time
When you prepare meals in advance you ensure that a healthy meal is always at your fingertips. This is key in situations where time is minimal and hunger is gargantuan. In these instances people usually turn to fast food for assistance, but with healthy food prepared and on hand you don’t have to fall into this trap.
I also suggest investing in quality tupperware, a cooler, and a reusable ice pack. This will make your meals portable and allow you to eat something healthy at work, at school, or anytime you are on the run.
Portability is accessibility. Remember that!
3. Join or Create a Support Group
There are many traditional support groups you can join. Your gym may have one. Jenny Craig is another example of one. But, the memberships to these groups can be costly, and most people don’t have excess money to spend.
Luckily for us broke folks, 2014 offers many new options in the form of support groups.
If you have a Twitter or Instagram account, you can search using the hashtag #FitFam to find thousands of fitness minded people just like yourself. This hashtag is great for networking with healthy minds and for support on the road to fitness and health. It is truly an awesome thing.
YouTube also offers some great support groups.
Two of my favorite support channels are:
I refer beginners to their channels because both Lee and Javon are real people doing real things. They are not fitness models preaching at you. They are going through the journey and struggles of fitness and healthy living right before your eyes. They are two individuals I feel many people can relate to and can easily associate themselves with. I think that goes a long way when it comes to support and motivation.
You can follow both of them on their fitness journey as they post workouts, weekly challenges, and fitness tests. They also lend motivational ideas and always respond to questions and comments to help support their followers. They are genuinely good people and I suggest you give their channels a look.
Unfortunately, there are positives and negatives to anything on the internet. The positives highlighted above strongly out weigh the negatives, but be aware that negatives exist. People will try to sell you on products you don’t need and give you bad advice from time to time. Luckily, this is easy to spot. Simply put, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is. Remember that moving forward.
I hope these tips support you in your journey to become fit and live a healthy lifestyle. For further assistance I recommend checking out my Beginner’s Fitness Survival Guide.
