Copycat KFC Mashed Potatoes

This recipe for copycat KFC mashed potatoes really does taste just like the original. You’ll think it’s the real deal. Smooth, creamy deliciousness.

Are you a fan of mashed potatoes?

My family and I really love mashed potatoes so much, I make some at least twice a month and even every week as our side dish with dinner.

Have you had KFC mashed potatoes?

A few years ago I would run through the drive-in of KFC and pick up their mashed potatoes and gravy to serve with the dinner.  My meatloaf goes really well with mashed potatoes.

For awhile I never said anything. No one knew!

I couldn’t stay silent any longer when my son said they were the best mashed potatoes in the world!

I came clean and then realized I can definitely come up with my own copycat KFC mashed potatoes.

My blog is filled with copycat recipes so, this one should not be any harder to figure out how to get my recipe to taste like the original. Hey, I did come up with a Copycat KFC Coleslaw recipe and that too tastes just like the Colonel’s original recipe.

Well, I did and now my son says these tasted just like KFC and were great!

The recipe is so simple you won’t even believe how they are made.

Now, just to let you know, my recipe below is made very similar to the original.

I promise the main ingredient is probably not what you are thinking it should be but, this is how they make it at all the KFC restaurants.

I’ve checked double checked, and tripled checked. Even went to a few KFC restaurants and asked the nice people behind the counter.

Each one told me what I already thought and heard. You can even go to the KFC website and you’ll see the ingredients that’s in their mashed potatoes recipe.

Give this a try. It’s probably the most simple copycat recipe you have made before.

You and your family will love these creamy mashed potatoes that really do taste just like KFC!

Recipe note… Below is the recipe for KFC gravy. You didn’t think I  would forget about the gravy did you? The potatoes are so good on their own but, they are beyond scrumptious with the hot gravy poured over the top. Also, I highlighted the Copycat KFC Coleslaw recipe here and below too. Enjoy all three recipes!!

Copycat KFC Mashed Potatoes

Yields: 4 to 5 side dishes

There are seven ingredients in these copycat KFC mashed potatoes and that includes the water along with the salt and pepper.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup whole milk, 2 percent should work too
  • 1 1/2 cup cold water or use 1 cup cold water and 1/2 cup chicken stock or broth
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted or salted butter for the top, this is optional
  • 3/4 tsp coarse salt like sea or kosher
  • 1 1/2 cups instant mashed potato flakes, yup, you read that right. I know what you are thinking but, that’s what I was told.
  • 1/4 to 1/2  teaspoon ground pepper, more for the top if you like your mashed potatoes peppery.
  • The original recipe I’m told is made with MSG, I just couldn’t put that in this or any of my recipes. The salt and pepper added enough flavor and the small amount of stock will too if using.

Copycat KFC Gravy Recipe

Yields: Enough for 4 to 5 servings over the side dishes of Copycat KFC mashed potatoes

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or vegetable oil, I wouldn’t use olive oil for this recipe
  • 2 1/2 cups chicken stock or chicken broth, low sodium is fine to use also
  • 4 1/2 tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt like see or kosher salt, if you are using low sodium chicken broth then you may want to go up to 3/4 to 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • As I wrote above for the mashed potatoes, I’m told MSG is in the original gravy. I did not add it in this recipe

Directions:

  1. In a medium size saucepan, heat the butter or oil on a low to medium heat. Add in the all purpose flour. Mix until combined and starts to turn brown. Take off the heat for just a minute.
  2. Now, add in the stock, salt, onion powder, and pepper. Using a small wire whisk, combine the ingredients until combined and smooth. Put back on the stove and continue to whisk or by now you can mix with a wooden spoon or spatula and let the gravy come to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and let the gravy cook with a low boil for about 15 minutes. Take off the heat and let sit on the side to thicken up for about 5 minutes. When ready to serve, if needed heat up again but not to a boil or place in the microwave in a microwave safe pitcher or measuring cup.
  3. Pour over the copycat KFC mashed potatoes and enjoy!
