How to Set Goals for Success in 5 Steps

Everyone wants to feel successful, but the million dollar questions is: “What does success mean?”

  • Is success having millions of dollars?
  • Is success being middle class with 2-3 kids, a significant other and a white picket fence?
  • Maybe, success is being 8% body fat and muscular?

The truth is “success” is defined differently for everyone. But, regardless of your definition, these 5 tips will help increase your chances of becoming successful.

1. Define Success

You must first define success in your own words. Figure out what you want to achieve and be specific.

For example, if you want to lose weight state the amount of weight you want to lose and set a time line for goal achievement.

Being specific will help you stay on task and allow you to actually measure your success in the future.

2. Create Short Term Goals

Inevitably, there will be steps that need to be taken to achieve your goal. You need a plan. This is where short term goals come into play.

One of your short term goals for losing weight may be to workout 2-3 times a week.

This is something that is easily measured and can be reflected on at the end of the week. I suggest choosing at least two short term goals that will help you achieve your long term goal.

3. Write it down

Write your goal down and place your goal somewhere visible. The old way of doing this was writing it on paper and sticking it on the fridge. My best tip for this step is to write down in a notepad app on your phone, screen shot it, and set it as the background on your phone. You will now see your goal over 50 times a day!

4. Reflect and Adjust

At least once a week you need to reflect on your success. You can do this by going for a walk, listening to music, or just by staring at the wall in a quiet room. The point is, it doesn’t really matter what you do as long as it’s constructive and allows you to think about the implementation of your goals in your life.

If you determine you are not being successful you need to adjust your approach. These changes may be small or large depending on the situation.

If you find that you are skipping workouts because you are too tired after work it may be better to train in the morning. Likewise, if you find that you order unhealthy food for lunch while at work, packing your lunch may be a short term goal to add.

Be versatile and flexible.

5. Learn from Failure

Do not Reject it Failure is the best learning tool there is. It gives you experience and can teach you so much. So many people want to reject failure and forget about it, when you actually need to embrace it. Use failure as a tool to help you achieve success in the future. Learn from your mistakes and never make them again.
