It’s All About The Veggies – Helpful Tips To Keep On Hand

vegetables in a basket

Here’s a few tips that I have been using for some time now. I felt bad when I had to throw out veggies that had gone bad. These easy and helpful tips keep veggies and herbs lasting fresher and longer.

Extend Veggie Freshness

Line the bottom of your refrigerators crisper drawer with paper towels. They’ll absorb the excess moisture that causes veggies to rot. Replace every few months or when the paper looks like it needs it.

Make Veggies Crunchy Again

When radishes, celery, or carrots have lost their crunch, simply pop them in a bowl of iced water along with a slice of raw potato and watch the limp vegetables freshen up right before your eyes. Use them that day if possible.

Keep Herbs Fresh

To keep leftover herbs like parsley and basil fresh after taking  home from the store. Take the leftover  bunches, wash, dry on paper towels. Then, put whole bunches in freezer bags and place in freezer up to a month. When you need them, they’ll be easier to chop, and they’ll defrost the minute they hit a hot pan.

Storing Asparagus and Broccoli Short Term in Fridge

An easy way to keep both of these veggies in the fridge is to keep the stems in a rubber band and standing in about 2 inches of cold water. You can loosely cover the tops with a plastic bag. The asparagus will stay fresh for about 7 days and the broccoli about 5 days. If the water starts to get cloudy, just replace with fresh cold water.
